Monsoon Rains Wash Out the Driveway

When we bought Harmony Hollow we’d heard stories about how the driveway washes out with monsoon rains. We laughed as we were told stories about residents being stranded for days and having to zip-line across the creek in order to get their groceries.

So we went in knowing that driveway maintenance was going to be an ongoing task, as we are committed to not changing the natural landscape in a permanent way.

But, even being equipped with what we were told, we were not prepared for the experience of the amazing power of the Creek when it runs!

On average a good monsoon will fill the Cave Creek with about 4 feet of water. Our first year we got one that hit 8 feet! We know this because the US Geographical Services has gauges at the Stamp Mill

Long-time Creeker friends assured us that it’s “not always like this!” But, it won’t bother us if it is. We knew what we were signing up for.

The run that hit 8 feet reached the top of the pipe. It’s a true marvel to experience the creek running, especially for Arizonans. Most of the year the creek is a dry rock bed so we enjoy every last drop until it’s gone.

As the water progresses downstream it’s more manageable but you still have to be careful. Steve has rescued more than one contractors’ truck who thought they could make it through, only to sink into the mud in the middle.

As the waters go down we are always surprised by what is left behind. When it’s running you can hear the force of the water banging rocks and boulders together. When it’s calm you hear the trickle of the tiny rapids.

It’s fun to see the surprises of what is left behind, how the landscape has changed, and the treasures that wash down from upstream.

It’s always an adventure, and we’re here for it!
